The Progressive Hoof - Trimming
Initial
Setup - Trimming
Maintenance - Trimming
Natural hoofcare trimming is an approach that allows the horses hooves to decide how to be balanced. Wild horses do this
every single day, relying on various types of terrain and movement that allows their hooves to condition perfectly for its
environment. The domestic horse usually lacks this ability due to confinement and unnatural horse-keeping practices. Domestic
horses must rely on people to take care of their hooves. Trimming to the guidelines of the AANHCP is non-invasive method that
promotes hoof mechanism and function
The hooves on this Rocky Mountain Gaited Horse had been barefoot, but not trimmed for several months. The
false sole on these hooves was over 5/8" thick
This horse has been barefoot since Dec 2005. She receives a maintenance trim every 4 weeks, where the mustang
roll is re-established and the hoof balance is checked and rarely corrected. The heels are the same height in
reference to the digital axis and the sole is hard and uniform. Maintenance trim hooves rarely if ever have sand
cracks or seedy toe often seen with shod horses. The hoof walls have good straight smooth growth with minimum
flaring and a tight white line. The sole may develop more concavity and thickness. Concavity is a by-product of hard
healthy thick soles developed on varied terrain. As concavity is achieved the bars will take care of themselves. I
rarely ever need to touch the bars on these hooves. Trimming hooves is a continuing process where the hoof will
just keep getting healthier and healthier.
